Aramco presents environmental excellence awards

At the 11th Saudi Aramco President’s Award for Environmental Excellence for 2015 in Dhahran, the spotlight was on superior performers who “protect the areas in which we live and work” while carrying out some of the biggest industrial operations in the global energy industry.
Competition for the award is intensifying as more company departments redouble their efforts to boost overall environmental performance, said Osama I. Fageeha, manager of the environment protection department (EPD).
In 2015 alone, Saudi Aramco departments pursued 250 initiatives.
“Although we are only recognizing five organizations today, I would like to emphasize that all operating and supporting organizations have exerted significant efforts to protect the environment,” Fageeha said.
Saudi Aramco President and CEO Amin Nasser congratulated the awardees on their achievements and praised them for being role models of environmental stewardship.
The winning departments for 2015 were operating organizations — Yanbu refinery department, Hawiyah NGL recovery plant department, and Abqaiq plants operations department; service organization was aviation department; and the most improved organization was east-west pipelines department (EWPD).
Abqaiq plants operations was one of winners at the awards, the department’s fifth triumph since the inception of the prize.
Khalid S. Al-Ghamdi, acting manager of Abqaiq plants operations, said: “This is a unique achievement, and those five wins are commendable because they indicate a level of commitment to the cause of environmental protection that has been sustained over the years at Abqaiq plants.”
The environmental management system (EMS) was instrumental in setting clear goals for the winners. Saudi Aramco’s aviation department developed an EMS to continually improve its performance in environmental protection. The department used international best practices to customize the EMS to its operations and set clear KPIs to measure and monitor environmental performance.
“EMS allows you to move step by step toward achieving your goals,” said Mohammad E. Shammakhi, aviation department environmental coordinator.
